In doing so, it has become a beloved piece of music that continues to resonate with listeners around the world. Songwriters strive to create lyrics that will have a lasting impact for generations, such as the words to songs like Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” or Paul Simon’s “Bridge over Troubled Water” for instance. How a melody complements those lyrics has a lot to do with a song’s success, of course. But the true songwriting greats know how to come up with an emotional and universal lyric that can make listeners want to hear a song over and over again.

This infusion of funk and R&B into a rock format was not typical at the time, but it helped the Talking Heads stand out from their peers. The band’s fusion of different genres appealed to a wide range of listeners, and it helped them become one of the most popular and influential bands of the 1980s. “Burning Down The House” is notable for its use of funk and R&B elements, including a driving bassline, punchy horns, and syncopated rhythms. David Byrne has said that he was inspired by the work of funk legends James Brown and George Clinton, and the song reflects his fascination with the genre. The addition of horns, played by funk musician Wayne Shorter, gives the track an irresistible energy that complements the powerful vocals and intricate percussion.

There really is a China Grove (in Texas), but Tom Johnston didn't know about it when he wrote the Doobie Brothers song. As one of the major hits of Jones' later career, it appears on numerous compilations of Jones' work. Songwriter U: How To Use Chord Progressions In Your Songwriting, Part I
“Burning Down the House,” with lyrics by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne, was the best-selling single the band ever had, and was proof that a great lyric is in the ear of the listener. The song purportedly evolved from a jam by the husband-and-wife rhythm section of Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, with Byrne coming up with syllables and phrases that fit the rhythm of the song, finally deciding on something resembling verses. A bunch of verses, sung to two different rhythms and two slightly different sets of chord changes.
Talking Heads, “Burning Down The House”
The early 1980s were a time of great change in American society, with the rise of Ronald Reagan and conservative politics leading to a backlash against progressive values. The music of the era reflected this shift, with many artists struggling to find their place in a rapidly changing landscape. One of the most interesting aspects of “Burning Down The House” is its use of deliberate ambiguity in the lyrics.

While the chorus (“Burning down the house!”) is clear, the verses are more mysterious and open to interpretation. Lead singer David Byrne has said that he intentionally left the lyrics vague in order to create a feeling of warmth and excitement rather than frustration or anger. One of Canada's most popular and eclectic performers, Hawksley tells stories about his oldest songs, his plentiful side projects, and the ways that he keeps his songwriting fresh.

It’s a song that’s been around for over 33 years, and shows no signs of going away. A young boy resembling Byrne takes his place from time to time; eventually, younger counterparts start moving the arms of all four band members to play the music. After the screen goes blank, both young and adult Byrne leave the stage, and the video ends with an extended close-up of Byrne's face projected on a highway at night. As music critic Chris Molanphy has noted, “Burning Down The House” is a song that manages to be both catchy and meaningful. It reflects the cultural and political context of its time while also tapping into universal and timeless themes.
“Burning Down The House” by Talking Heads is a song that speaks to the complexity and richness of the human experience. Its fusion of different musical genres, its use of deliberate ambiguity in the lyrics, and its reflection of the historical and cultural context of its time all combine to create a piece of music that is both meaningful and enjoyable. As we continue to revisit the music of the past, “Burning Down The House” remains one of the most beloved and significant songs of its era. “Burning Down the House” has been covered by popular and respected acts like Bonnie Raitt and John Legend. So obviously what some might consider gibberish is also considered a serious piece of music that’s worthy of recognition.

This sentiment was reflected in the music video, which featured the band performing frenetically in front of a backdrop of flames and explosions. Today, “Burning Down The House” is considered a classic of the 1980s and an enduring part of the Talking Heads’ legacy. It has been covered and sampled by numerous artists, from Tom Jones to Bon Iver, and its place in popular culture has endured. Some people have interpreted the song as a commentary on societal upheaval and rebellion. Others have seen it as a metaphor for sexual desire, with lines like “Hold tight, we’re in for nasty weather” suggesting an impending storm. Still, others have connected the song to the experience of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with the line “Watch out, you might get what you’re after” alluding to temptation and loss of control.

In Australia it peaked at a modest No. 94, while in the UK, where Talking Heads would release 14 charting singles, it failed to chart. "Burning Down the House" is a song by new wave band Talking Heads, released in July 1983 as the first single from their fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues. The song’s appeal to a wide range of people, regardless of their political or cultural background, speaks to the universal themes it touches upon. By tapping into the visceral emotions of rebellion, lust, and joy, the Talking Heads created a song that remains relevant today. “Burning Down The House” came at a time when many people were feeling disillusioned and frustrated. It spoke to a desire to break free from constraints and embrace a sense of spontaneity and abandon.
Listeners who like their words to convey more easily-understood thoughts might hear this and say, “Uh, what does that mean? ” in the same way that one might try to analyze a piece of abstract art by Kandinski or Pollock. But then, maybe that’s the point – to a lot of folks, this type of writing is art. To be fair, there are some lines here that are relevant to everyone, like the opening “Watch out you might get what you’re after.” Byrne wasn’t exactly the first person to give that warning, but it doesn’t turn up in a lot of songs.
Welsh singer Tom Jones recorded a version of "Burning Down the House" with Swedish pop band the Cardigans for his 1999 collaborations album, Reload. In common with the other tracks on the album, the recording was made with the collaborators' choice of producer and studio, in this case Tore Johansson and Tambourine Studios in Malmö, Sweden. A year later, an extended live version of the song is a highlight of the band's landmark concert film Stop Making Sense. In September of 2023, commemorating the film's 40th anniversary, a remastered version was released across America in IMAX theaters, and later in conventional theaters worldwide.
The white siding and natural stone walls keep the rest of the home light and cheery, with slight contrast from the black trim, door hardware, and light fixtures. Give your house a refresh, starting with a brand-new exterior color scheme. A beautiful exterior makes a lasting impression and sets the tone for the rest of the home before you even open the front door. The exterior color scheme you choose for siding, trim, window shutters, the front door, and other elements plays a crucial role in the home’s overall appearance and atmosphere. “Pale greens are a great alternative to classic white as they'll neutralize when drenched in sunlight, but become more nuanced and subtle in the shade,” says O’Donnell. Taupe pairs well with earthy color schemes like stone siding and brick accents.
Rich Greens
When in doubt, rely on tried and true guidelines from the color wheel. Hues in the same family—varying shades of gray, for example—work well and are called monochromatic. Those hues next to each other (analogous) work well together, as do opposites, also called complementary colors. If you prefer a mostly monochromatic look, choose the darkest, the lightest, and a mid tone color from one paint-chip strip as your palette's primary players.
Medium Gray + White
Trim painted camel emphasizes this home's shape, making it appear wider and taller. The rich camel tone shows up again to bring out the windows and entry door. Window frames in an eggplant hue sound a playful note and work with periwinkle blue details to add architectural interest to the plainly profiled abode.
Contrasting Exterior Color Scheme
It works nicely with the walnut, oak, soapstone, and marble materials used outside and inside the house. “Color can make a big impact on the look of a house,” confirms architect Jim Rill, principal of Rill Architects, in Bethesda, Maryland. For inspiration, consider your home’s style and scale as well as architectural styles typical of your neighborhood and region.

She has been a project manager, editor, and writer for a long list of magazines, including many gardening, home design, and holiday crafts titles. Bright green or lime, whichever you prefer to call it, almost offers a whimsical look to a home. While this may seem like a good color for a shed, it's also an excellent color to make your home stand out and be the talk of the community. Marie Proeller Hueston is the author of several books on home design decorating, including Country Living Farmhouses and Country Living Cottage Style.
This one is very vivid and is made even brighter with the combination of the blue door and window. Turquoise is a fun choice for those who live in warmer climates; it evokes sunny skies and the sea. If you’re nervous that it’s too bold of a color for your neighborhood, cool it down with white accents. The accent shades chosen here—a dusty lavender-gray and a bright turquoise—would typically not be used together.

A bright red front door is a warm welcome into this Tudor-style cottage. White window trim gives dimension to the home's beige trim, which is repeated on the fence as well. Light blue, as opposed to a navy blue, keeps the home from looking too much like Fourth of July decor. This home has two different siding types, but a single color unifies them.
Paint Your Garage Door: Low Effort, Big Impact
When a house façade is “flat,” add depth to the walls with that same white contrasted against a nature-inspired Anjou Pear. You can then bring a harmony of colors to your exterior walls and doors that complement the home’s natural environment. No matter the shade, gray beautifully sets off white trim, as well as a wide variety of other colors. At this house, cobalt blue turns an entry door enchanting and repeats in simple lines accenting the roof and soffits. Signature sand-colored plaster walls complement this rustic-looking front door painted a dark, forest green. Reddish-brown shingles match the brick pavers leading up to the door.
All you need to do is combine that color with a neutral in order to make it warmer or cooler, lighter or darker. This calming and notable hue works especially well on homes set in established neighborhoods or on tree-lined streets. On this true-blue exterior, trim painted white outlines the roof peaks and windows. Black paint highlights sashes and dentil moldings around the windows and the door trim.
The right exterior house colors can make or break a first impression. “Paint sets the tone for what you want your home to express,” Katie Burnet, an interior designer with Rumor Designs in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, says. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the decision—especially considering what a big, expensive, and highly visible undertaking painting your house can be—you're definitely not alone. That’s why we’ve put together an expert guide to help you choose an exterior color palette you love. Although you need not be bound by tradition, a home's style should be a factor in how to choose exterior paint colors. An exuberant collection of pastels may not be the best fit for a ranch-style home, while very bold hues may feel out of place on a Victorian.
If you’re known to walk through your neighborhood and admire the various house exteriors, you’re not alone. Between different architectural styles, paint colors, and lush landscaping, there’s plenty to be emboldened by for your own home. To help inspire you, we’ve rounded up 40 house exteriors that are admirable in one way or another—or, more likely, many ways. Take notes of the color schemes, ingenious yard designs, and whatever else sparks exclamations of "I love that!" for you to recreate for your own space. Cool gray siding fashions an exterior that's easy on the eye and benefits from warming touches of paprika red.
Bring home samples and see how they look with your other exterior colors. Trending peach and apricot evoke a warm feel and work well in nearly every part of the country. And pair peach with black and white for a classic look, or try greens for an unexpected twist. Ocean blues, greens and aquas are a welcome update to the pale blues of yesterday. Prepare your home’s exterior for painting and try pairing a seaside aqua hue with ivory for refreshing look.

“Gray is a great neutral that can match just about any style of home and is a beautiful complement to brick,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “The slightly more saturated shutters and door provide a sophisticated accent and bring in the tones of sky and sea.” Seen here are Sherwin-Williams’s Comfort Gray (SW 6205) and Rain (SW 6219). Once you've narrowed down your possible exterior home colors to several choices, get color samples and paint them in large swaths. If you still can't decide, "Hire a designer you trust or get a friend to look at your house with you," Killam says. "We get used to the way our own house looks and don't notice the things that an outside observer would."
Soft Green + White
"Work from the top down and be prepared to apply two coats of premium exterior paint," Xaykao says. Depending on the scale of the project, hiring a professional for exterior paint jobs is usually recommended. If you're choosing to do the work yourself, consider the following tips before you get started. Here, experts share top tips for ensuring you’re ready to tackle your exterior painting project. Give your home a distinctive identity with a dark blue and light pink color combination for a bold and fun statement that showcases character and creativity.
Pearl Gray + Slate Blue + White
A deeper shade of gray around the windows and doors supplies the final accent. Incorporate sage green into your home's exterior paint colors for a pretty, muted scheme. Green roofing is this home's statement feature and it pairs well with the surrounding tree canopy. A soft yellow door and matching curtains on the front porch add a pinch of bright color to the mix.
Light Gray
An emerging trend is to paint a home in two hues that normally wouldn’t be found in the same exterior color scheme. For example, try a gray paint on the siding with turquoise accents or a warm green with shutters in a cooler green hue. Earth tones like olive or sage green and variations of brown also appear prominently in exterior color palettes.
And whether your home is a traditional Victorian, Colonial or a Craftsman bungalow, gray-beige or a warm tan will look nice. And it pairs well with classic white and black, along with a door painted in a deep burgundy or a classic wood stain. Find the ideal exterior paint colors from Sherwin-Williams to delight visitors and highlight your style. From woodsy neutrals to vibrantly painted stucco, your before-and-after is bound to leave a lasting impression on you and your neighbors. "If you have an earthy color scheme, with muted colors like browns and creams, make sure you choose the beige vinyl window," Killam says. "And coordinate your trim color to go with it. A house with earthy stone combined with bright white vinyl windows will always look wrong."
How to Choose an Exterior Paint Color - Real Estate
Painting a room can be stressful, but painting a home exterior requires a lot more of a commitment in terms of time and money. Luckily, some carefully considered steps can help you know how to choose exterior house colors and find the perfect hues for your house. For a classic look with a subtle hint of warmness, consider an off-white or ivory paint job. “A particular favorite white paint is Benjamin Moore’s Swiss Coffee.
Add Window Boxes
Wood stains in midrange hues, in particular, work well on a variety of home styles. As with exterior wood paint colors, it's best to sample the stain on a swath of exterior wall to see how the color looks and feels throughout the day. For more classically styled homes, white is a traditional accent for window trim, pillars, and doors. When it comes to exterior color schemes, there's something to be said for tried-and-true combinations.
Using three colors is a general rule of thumb for selecting an exterior color scheme. Most homeowners assume those hues have to be distinctly different, but this monochromatic house proves otherwise. Here, light gray is the dominant color, while a medium tone accents the wood archway over the front door.
Off-White and Ink Black
Take a close look at the roof shingles, and you'll see where the homeowners found the inspiration for this scheme's blue and purple accent tones. Three rich colors used in just the right proportions give this home a striking look. This Prairie-style house is coated in a creamy buttermilk yellow that's rich enough to be unique, but not too bold. The subdued yellow is complemented by deep red trim throughout the exterior and a dark green balustrade on the second floor. These colors all work together to create the ideal retro yet fresh exterior.
Our 12 Favorite Peach Paint Colors For Interiors - Southern Living
The deep purple, like on this Berkshires ranch house of designer Annie Selke, has a lasting warmth that’ll make anyone who enters feel welcome. Dabble in subtle color blocking by painting the trim in turquoise, the window shutters in royal blue, and the siding in white. For this SĂŁo Paulo home, designer Maria Augusta “Guta” Louro chose Calca Jeans on the window shutters and Banho de Espuma on the door and window frames, both from Suvinil. Pair bright versions of them as exterior house colors, and your home will exude a lively energy that’s simultaneously calming.
Even though it’s cooler toned, it’s still neutral and works well with bright white siding and trim. Slate gray can give your home a moodier ambiance or make it look more modern, depending on your home’s architectural style. You can use this color on almost all architectural styles, from traditional brick homes to more modern styles. Bright white home exteriors pair with all accent colors, although black is one of the top shutter and trim choices. Dramatic exterior trim paint is one way to feature your home’s beautiful windows or doors. Try dark red trim, dark blue or black trim, or other bold trim colors for a classy exterior statement.

These are still planned to happen, but as both classes are in need of overhauls, it will take some before they are ready to be released. Be sure to keep an eye on the AQW Class Team Twitter for updates as they get closer to release. Therefore, we've shifted some of Execute's power into utility that more classes should be able to make use of. Craft pieces of the Sacred Forest Dragon armor set, and find additional items as reward drops from monsters. A known trouble maker returned and apparently bought a list of 500 scammed/hacked accounts from a scammer online and has been causing a stir with it.
Rifts no longer require Deadlock proc states to apply. Instead, Deadlock states now offer a stat bonus for a short time. This makes the class simpler to play, less prone to mistakes, and small cooldown changes make it slightly faster as well, without significantly impacting its performance. Performance and niche applicability increased. Mana costs increased to compensate for increased mana generation from new Damage over Time effects. Historically, Talon Twisting has been the catalyst of several unintended interactions with certain classes.
This reason is why you should never use the same password on multiple sites. It does not matter how secure we are if hackers find your password somewhere else. Each Arcana's Debris will cost either 1 Darkon or King Drago Insignia, and if you are only using Arcana's Debris to obtain the class, you will need a total of 80.
Deals damage and applies Crippling Smash, reducing your target's outgoing damage by 60% and Crit Chance by 30% for 8 seconds. Also has a 25% chance to stun your target for 1 second. These changes buff Chrono ShadowSlayer's baseline and smooth some parts of its playstyle. This also empowers non-Gunslinger mode by proportionally increasing the damage of FMJ Rounds.
While your target suffers from Blood Loss, all non lifesteal healing they receive is negated. Deals damage and applies Bloodlust, increasing your Crit Damage by 10% for 10 seconds, stacks to 10. Thrust your battleaxe forward, eviscerating your target. Deals damage and applies Titan's Fury, increasing your Haste by 20% for 15 seconds. Also applies Disemboweled, increasing your target's damage taken by 30% for 15 seconds.
This is the 3rd time AE held a gifting event. I'm sorry but I'm a little bit triggered by some stupid question or statement because some of your answers are already shown on design notes. Perform the ancient rite of the Blood Titans. Deals massive damage and applies Blood Rage, increasing your outgoing physical damage by 100% for 5 seconds, but reducing your Heal Power by 50%. The frequent activation of Nightfall and Daybreak auras proved to be quite frustrating, so the amount of times they activate throughout the fight have been reduced. The base damage of the two bosses has been increased to compensate for the change.
God of the Depths is intended to be a more accessible challenge fight in comparison to others. After some observation, we've concluded that it's in a good spot difficulty wise, but it is taking certain parties quite a long time to clear it. Therefore, the resistances of the God of the Depths have been lowered, the debuffs are slightly less frequent, and the Sacrosanct Tendril's respawn time has been increased. This week's class updates include changes to NOT A MOD, Dragonslayer General, and Chrono ShadowSlayer. Giving Chunin a few quality of life updates that should also improve its performance a tad.
Player support has been being spammed by these individuals as they attempt to use compromised accounts to trick the team or other players into giving them information. We have reset any reported accounts back to their original owner with a randomized password. This class presented an interesting challenge in design- it was already strong (if underappreciated), and aligning its damage types and stat model would have made it far too powerful.
